Inlays/Onlays

A strong, durable and effective repair

We strongly recommend inlays and onlays. They are similar to fillings, as they fill a hole in or on your tooth, but are used for more extensive damage. Inlays and onlays are custom made in a laboratory and cemented to the tooth with special glue adhesive for a secure finish. This is a private treatment which is worth every penny.

What are inlays and onlays?

Inlays and onlays are strong and can be an attractive alternative to amalgam fillings, large white fillings or crowns. Inlays are used within the tooth in a similar way to a filling, while onlays cover the outside of the tooth to treat more extensive areas of damage. They are most usually made from porcelain or ceramic material, but gold can also be used.

Ceramic material, most commonly porcelain, is the most aesthetic choice. It can be colour matched to your natural teeth for a seamless finish and can’t be seen when you smile or talk. Porcelain inlays and onlays are more affordable than other restorative opinions and are a popular choice.

Gold inlays and onlays are more expensive than the porcelain equivalent, but are incredibly strong and durable, lasting a very long time. They are usually used for back teeth as they are noticeable in the mouth, but some people like the gold colour effect.

What does the treatment involve?

Treatment for your inlay or onlay requires two visits to the practice to complete.

Initially, we examine your teeth and gums, making sure there is no other decay or infection present. We carefully prepare your affected tooth for treatment, removing the damaged part and cleaning it thoroughly. We take impressions of your prepared tooth so your inlay or onlay can be custom made. A temporary filling is used to protect your tooth between appointments.

When your inlay or onlay is ready, we invite you for your follow up visit. We check the fit and look is correct before fixing your restoration in place using strong dental adhesive.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I need an inlay or onlay?

Don’t worry, if there is decay or damage present in your tooth, your dentist will go through all the available options with you, including if an inlay or onlay would be suitable. We are here to help you make an informed decision and are best placed to find the best treatment.

How do I look after my inlay or onlay?

Simply treat your inlay or onlay just as you do your natural teeth. Make sure you brush and floss twice a day, and visit your dentist for regular check ups so they can keep an eye on your restoration.

How long will my inlay or onlay last?

Your inlay or onlay is designed to be hardwearing and should last a long time without any issues. Porcelain or ceramic restorations will not last as long as gold, but they still have the strength and durability to withstand chewing forces. A great oral hygiene routine at home will help your inlay or onlay last as long as possible.
