Examinations

Keeping your teeth and gums healthy

The most common reason to visit your dentist is for your examination appointment, and it is one of the most important too. Regular examinations enable us to help keep your teeth and gums in good condition, able to spot any issues before they get the chance to become more costly and involved problems in the future.

Why do I need a dental examination?

Your dentist is best placed to look after your teeth and gums, able to check all areas of your mouth for signs of decay, gum disease or any other issue and stop them from worsening. Even if your brushing routine at home is excellent, it is still important to attend regular check ups as an experienced professional eye may be able to spot things you are unaware of.

Your regular examination is the foundation of your dental care. If you choose to have cosmetic dental work or orthodontic treatment, this requires your teeth and gums to be healthy first, which is much more likely if you keep up with your routine care.

What does a dental examination appointment involve?

We begin the appointment by asking if you are in good general health, and if you have any concerns you would like to discuss or have had any problems since your last visit.

We thoroughly examine your teeth, gums, soft tissues and other areas of your mouth, looking for signs of damage, decay, infection and any other issues or abnormalities. We also carry out an oral cancer check, and look at any previous dental work you have had to make sure they are still working and looking good.

To finish the appointment, we may share some advice on how to keep up with an excellent oral hygiene routine at home, and give you some tips to help. If we find anything that needs further treatment, we devise a treatment plan and give you an idea of the expected timescale and costs.

Frequently asked questions
How often do I need to have a dental examination?

Ideally, you should see your dentist for a routine examination appointment every six months, so they can keep a regular eye on your teeth and gums. However, some patients may be advised to leave longer or shorter intervals between appointments, depending on their individual case. Your dentist will advise you when to book your next examination at the end of your appointment.

Will my dental examination hurt?

Your dental examination shouldn’t be painful. You may feel some discomfort while your dentist is checking your teeth and gums, but this doesn’t last long. If you find you are feeling lots of pain, please let your dentist know.

What happens if my dentist finds a problem at my examination appointment?

If your dentist finds an issue that needs attention, they will formulate a treatment plan during your examination, letting you know the treatment you need, how long it will take and the expected costs. You will also get the chance to ask any questions. In most cases, you will be booked in to have the dental work carried out at another time.
